This Is only a personal view and I may be completely wrong, but please, If you're having problems playing this game online, first try loading with "1. Civilization II can be played over and over again and you may never see the same thing since the maps are randomly generated and the whole game requires many decision makings. Options 2 - 6 are all obsolete sound hardware & drivers, so I'm pretty sure that our PC or other hardware gets 'locked up' because they're searching for these non-existent drivers. Today, its development is no longer continue and for emulation the free DOSBox emulator is most often used.

For what It's worth, I think It's the sound options which are causing the problem. Civilization Online developed by XL Games and published by Take-Two Interactive Software is an MMORPG that revolves around the Civilization franchise. Whenever the opening options give you a numbered choice, choose No.1.that's all there Is to It! It means, of course, that you have to play without sounds but, on a game of this type, It really makes no difference! (I normally listen to my fave music through my headphones when playing these kind of games, anyway, as I'm sure most retro-gamers do!). The solution will appear a bit strange, I can understand that - but It solves the problem! Trust this old git!
